How to determine which savings account is right for you?

Thornton T. Munger, a notable research expert in forestry for the U.S. Forest Service in the Pacific Northwest and a key figure in establishing the Wind River Experimental Forest, once remarked, "The habit of saving is itself an education; it fosters every virtue, teaches self-denial, cultivates the sense of order, trains to forethought, and so broadens the mind". This statement, profound and reflective, holds significant relevance in the realm of personal finance.

Adopting a disciplined approach to financial management is crucial. The principle of "every penny saved is a penny earned" rings true in this context. By consistently setting aside a portion of one's income, individuals can establish a solid foundation for their financial well-being

It is advisable for everyone, regardless of their economic background, profession, or place of residence, to open and maintain a Savings Account. Such an account serves as a safe repository for accumulated funds. Additionally, it is beneficial for parents or guardians to open Savings Accounts for minors. This early introduction to the concept of saving not only teaches them the importance of financial responsibility from a young age but also instills in them the value of money.

A savings account is fundamental to manage personal finances: pay utility bill, transfer money, withdraw, to shop, to address contingency needs, to invest, to receive money, and so on. And the balance in the savings bank account can earn you interest at the rate of 3.5%-6% per annum, as opposed to it lying idle and perhaps unsafe at home.

Moreover, Section 80TTA of the Income Tax Act, 1961 provides a deduction upto Rs 10,000 in respect of interest income earned on savings account. This deduction is available to Individuals and Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs). Further, for senior citizens, this year in the union budget 2018, the exemption for interest income earned on deposits with banks and post offices is increased from Rs 10,000 to Rs 50,000.

There are various types of saving bank accounts today, with frills and no-frills, with distinguishing features catering to your needs.
