Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) also known as “Digital Rupee” or “e₹” is defined by RBI as a legal tender issued by a central bank in a digital form. It is the same as a sovereign currency and is exchangeable one-to-one at par (1:1) with existing currency. Digital rupee (e₹) will offer features of physical cash like trust, safety and settlement finality with atomicity (i.e. immediate settlement of transactions) in digital mode. Digital rupee (e₹) represents a direct claim on the central bank. It can be used to carry out transactions or store value digitally, similar to the manner in which currency notes are used in physical form.
Now you can send digital rupee to individuals/merchants by scanning UPI QR.
This features when turned On, will auto load the excess amount needed to the complete the transaction.
Please note: The maximum limit for Auto load is set at INR 2,000. When the excess amount exceeds the above threshold, you will have to load your wallet manually.
Axis Bank Digital Rupee App can be used to make payments to any merchant having a CBDC wallet & Merchants who are using UPI as a accepted mode of payment. Basically you can use this App to pay to any merchant by scanning their QR. Digital Rupee (e₹) can be held in a wallet issued by banks and can be linked to your existing Bank Savings account. The wallet is a digital version of your physical wallet and Digital Rupee (e₹) can be deposited/ withdrawn to/from your existing bank Savings account into this wallet.
Digital Rupee (e₹) is a form of currency, a digital version of physical currency which one can use to make payments, whereas UPI or other fund transfer modes are only forms of payment. Digital Rupee (e₹) transactions occur between Digital rupee wallets and UPI QR codes, whereas UPI and other modes of payment like NEFT/RTGS/IMPS supports money transfer from Bank account to Bank account.
You can transact in Digital Rupee (e₹) through a convenient and safe digital wallet offered by Axis Bank. Digital Rupee (e₹) can be used to make payments to merchants and individuals, who also hold a Digital Rupee (e₹) wallet via mobile number or scanning Digital Rupee (e₹) QR codes. Digital Rupee app is interoperable with UPI and can also be used to scan and pay to existing UPI QR codes of merchants.
So basically, a user can hold up to Rs. 1 Lakh at any given point in the wallet.
Cooling period will be applicable for the new customers, and they will be able to load Rs. 5,000 per day. Cooling period will be applicable for 5 days post registration.
For a new customer, cooling period is applied for the first 5 days after registration wherein cumulative transaction amount limit is 5 thousand and total transaction count is 10. Daily transaction limit of Rs. 50,000 /20 transactions will be applicable after 5 days. Cooling period will also be applicable for 5 days in the event a customer re-registers after de-registration, changes pin on the App or re-installs the app after deleting it.
During cooling period, only a cumulative value of Rs. 5000 or total transaction count of 10 is allowed. Cooling period duration is 5 days.
Monthly limit for number of Person to Person (P2P) transactions is 100. There are no limits for person to merchant (P2M) transactions. This also includes the outgoing UPI transactions. Load & Redeem are excluded.

Customers can reach out to the bank for raising chargeback request for scenario wherein transaction was successful, but merchant is claiming that they have not received the transaction amount. Bank shall lodge a chargeback request with NPCI basis customer’s consent. Concerned NPCI team shall investigate the claim. This process has a TAT of 15 business days. In the event chargeback request is rejected, customer can ask the bank to raise pre-arbitration request which has a TAT of additional 7 business days. If chargeback is successful, the bank shall credit the customer’s wallet in 3 business days. This is set process as per NPCI and the bank can assist but TAT is not in our control.
Note: For raising pre-arbitration request, customer needs to reach out to the bank and raise the request within 7 days of rejection of initial request.
“Special Purpose Digital Rupee” is also called as Programmable Central Bank Digital Currency (PCBDC). It is the designated digital rupee within Axis Mobile Digital Rupee Wallet, regulated and guided by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). It is exclusively designed and programmed for carrying out transactions with a specific purpose.
Special Purpose Digital Rupee is assigned to beneficiary by Sponsor entity which can be government or non-government organization. Beneficiary/ user who has provided Special purpose digital Rupee by sponsor entity can start using it on issuer Digital Rupee Banking App. Beneficiary/ user is not required to necessarily have Savings account with issuer bank to avail this facility.

Offline CBDC is a mode of payment on Axis Digital Rupee wherein customers can transfer or receive funds in offline mode. Enabling this feature will allow you to transfer or receive funds from other digital rupee apps (supporting offline feature) when you are in remote areas having no network reception.

Tokens received during an offline session are marked as “Un-spendable” and therefore, cannot be used in the same offline session. This has been done to safeguard customer from fraudulent activities. Customer will have to come online and use sync option to realise the tokens. Sync option is available in home screen as well as Offline feature management screen.
Only Digital Rupee wallet to wallet transactions is allowed in Offline CBDC.
Offline balance will be visible in Offline management screen (Home page -> Offline wallet) when customer is online. Offline balance will be visible in home page itself when customer is offline.
Offline transaction operate using NFC technology. Distance between NFC chips of both devices should be less than 4 centimetres.

Tokens received during an offline session are marked as “Un-spendable”. Customer will have to come online and use sync option to realise the tokens. Sync option is available in home screen as well as Offline feature management screen.
If customer uninstalls/deletes the app without unloading/ deactivating offline feature, customer will recover only online spendable tokens post re-installation of the App. Offline spendable tokens in such case will be locked for 30 days. The respective offline tokens will be transferred back in the customer’s wallet If the tokens remain uncontested for the mentioned period. We strongly recommend not to delete the App while in the Offline mode. Delete only when transactions are settled & visible as part of the overall wallet balance.
If customer initiates deregistration and offline feature is still active, in such scenario the system will automatically deactivate the Offline feature and unmark all offline spendable tokens present in offline balance.
